What is the difference between matte and cream lipstick?

Almost like choosing your preferred foundation finishes, the differences between Matte and Cream lipsticks varies on how they look, feel and last. Matte finishes are a non-shine formula, that usually consists of mattifying agents like Silica to keep the lipstick on for a longer period of time. This keeps the colour opaque and full-coverage all day long with one swipe for a long-wearing finish! Matte lipsticks come in varying formulas - from our most full coverage and long-lasting liquid lipstick formula like bold red Feels So Grand Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick, a comfortable and classic peachy-nude Velvet Teddy MACximal Silky Matte Lipstick, to a diffused, romantic soft pink for those that want a Matte but don't want to compromise on comfort Scattered Petals Powder Kiss Lipstick.

Although they all look and feel different to accomodate different wearer needs, the common denominator is their no-shine, long-lasting finish. However, due to their lack of moisture, they can feel a little dry throughout the day so try our amazing Prep + Prime Lip Primer as a base to apply before your lipstick to hydrate your lips without excess moisture to ensure the lipstick lasts while still feeling comfortable.

Cream finishes are on the opposite spectrum to Mattes, where they have a shine-finish with moisturising agents like Castor or Argan Oil to keep the lips hydrated while being easy to apply. These are more suited if you like the feel of lipglosses but would prefer something that lasts longer. You can choose between a lip-balm like texture with a soft touch of colour, like an everyday nude Creme in Your Coffee Cremesheen Lipstick or for those that have always wanted to try a red but are a little cautious - try a sheer wash of colour like Lady Bug Lustreglass sheer-shine Lipstick.

Although Matte finishes are naturally more opaque, our Cream lipstick ranges that include a soft autmnal nude like Smoked Almond Amplified Lipstick or a classic dusty rose like Twig Satin Lipstick don't compromise on colour pay-off, with a plethora of beautiful shades that stay on all day comfortably while maintaining a gorgeous, plump finish. However, due to their moisture levels, they may bleed around the lips and slip off throughout the day so make sure you use our holy grail Prep + Prime Lip Primer to make sure the the lipstick stays on or opt for a liquid formulation for a punch of colour with an all-day glossy wear.

TOP TIPS:
Pairing items like Lip Liners and our Prep + Prime Lip Primer can extend the longevity of either finish, as they create a base for any of the lipsticks to stay on longer. This also allows you to play around with different textures and colours to create a custom formula for yourself. For example, you could use a warm brown tone like Cork Lipliner which has Matte finish to deepen and maintain the colour all day!
