What to put on your lips before lipstick?

There are a few different ways you can prepare your lips before applying lipstick, to help with the feel and look of your lipstick.

The first thing to do would be to examine your lips and look out for any areas of dry or flaky skin that may cause the lipstick to feel uncomfortable. Start off by using MAC Lip Scrubtious in Sweet Vanilla to gently exfoliate away any unwanted texture by taking a generous amount of product onto your finger and using soft circlular motions to buff the surface of your lips. Wipe away or rinse if desired to remove the product from your lips.

Now that we have a smooth surface to work with, the next step would be to hydrate and prime the lips. To add an extra boost of hydration, before applying MAC Prep + Prime Lip Primer, layer your lips in MAC Lip Conditioner - an emollient based balm that conditions and locks in moisture with a beautiful soft shine. Next, prep the lip with MAC Prep + Prime Lip Primer, a colour-free base that adds light moisture, smoothes and refines lips to improve the appearance of your lip products. Run this product slightly over your natural lip line to prevent feathering of lip products!

For a long lasting finish try using a lip liner in a similar shade to the lipstick you wish to apply such as MAC Cherry Lip Liner with MAC Ruby Woo lipstick. You can also use a slightly deeper lip liner to define the edges and blend with a MAC 316 Brush for a fuller lip look. Finally, its time to apply your lipstick! Glide on your chosen lip shade directly from the bullet or try out MAC 316 Lip Brush and instantly feel and see the difference after prepping your lips with care. Your lips will feel hydrated, plump and ready to wear your lipstick all day long!
